Learn everything about the Phare des Baleines

Located in Saint-Clément-des-Baleines, just a 30-minute drive from the 5-star campsite Ile de Ré Les Grenettes, the Phare des Baleines is one of the iconic landmarks of the Ile de Ré. Built next to a vast sandy beach, the Conche des Baleines, this historic monument was constructed in the mid-19th century. Standing 60 meters tall, it is among the highest lighthouses in France. Commissioned by Vauban to replace the old lighthouse built nearly two centuries earlier, in 1682, the old lighthouse has since been converted into a museum and welcomes over 150,000 visitors annually.

One of the most stunning views on the Ile de Ré

The Phare des Baleines is notable for its history and height but especially for its privileged location. After climbing the 257 spiral steps to the top, visitors are rewarded with a panoramic view of the Bay of Biscay, the Conche des Baleines, and its coastline (visible up to 50 km). Built on a cape, it offers a clear view of parts of the western and northern coasts of Ré la Blanche, the tiled rooftops of Saint-Clément, and the surrounding countryside. It particularly fascinates nature lovers, artists seeking inspiration, and photography enthusiasts. Undoubtedly, it provides one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the Ile de Ré.
