Along the Vendée coastline, weather conditions and geography provide surfers with ideal opportunities to practice their passion under the best possible circumstances. This is especially true on the Île de Ré, where most beaches are perfect for surfing, whether you’re a beginner or looking to improve your skills. Swells from the Atlantic crash onto the island’s southwest coast, creating powerful waves for surfers to ride and perform tricks. With numerous excellent surf spots across the island, we’ve compiled a top 5 list of the best surfing locations on the Île de Ré, from south to north.
Top 5 Surf Spots on the Île de Ré
- Les Grenettes
Located near Sainte-Marie-de-Ré, this spot, which is quite popular among surfers, is perfect for beginners. The waves are relatively low and break either left or right over a rocky seabed. The best waves appear when the wind blows from the northeast. - Le Gouillaud
Le Gouillaud is an excellent surf spot on the Île de Ré, easily accessible with quality waves all year round. It is located near our campsite by Bois-Plage-en-Ré. The rocky reef waves here are not very powerful, making it a great spot for paddleboarding as well. Unfortunately, the spot is only surfable at high tide. Nearby, you’ll find Gros Jonc Beach, another great surf spot to try. - La Pergola
Located on a beautiful beach south of La Couarde-sur-Mer, La Pergola is a popular spot for local surfers. The waves here are relatively small and hollow, with steep barrels. When the swell comes from the west, the waves are of excellent quality. - La Pointe du Grignon
Fully exposed to the swell with no natural protection, La Pointe du Grignon at Ars-en-Ré is one of the best surf spots on the Île de Ré. Loved by professionals, this spot is only surfable at high tide due to the rocks. For thrill-seekers, this is the place to be! - The Unmissable Trio: Le Lizay/Le Petit Bec/Diamond Head
Three spots instead of one, but what spots they are! This trio of beaches between Conche des Baleines and Pointe du Lizay, in the north of the Île de Ré, is a real paradise for surfers. Surrounded by wild pine forests and sparsely populated by tourists, these three beaches are the go-to for experienced surfers and wave enthusiasts. The waves are powerful and fast, reaching up to 3 meters or more on days with strong swells. These technical spots, however, are not recommended for beginners.
The Île de Ré boasts many surf schools offering fun and friendly lessons. Whether you’re eager to learn to surf on the Île de Ré or simply want to enjoy your passion with ease, you’ll find stunning beaches ideal for surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, and other water sports. Your camping holiday on the Île de Ré will be even more enjoyable!
