The Île de Ré is one of the most popular destinations in Charente-Maritime. Also known as "La Ré Blanche," it is located 20 km from La Rochelle, the starting point to reach various towns on the island, including Saint-Martin-de-Ré, La Flotte-en-Ré, and Sainte-Marie-de-Ré. From the 5-star Île de Ré Les Grenettes campsite, you will be ideally located to explore the island's various tourist attractions.

Geography of the Île de Ré

The Île de Ré is a favorite destination for families. It’s an intimate place that doesn’t give the impression of confinement. Although the largest island in metropolitan France, it’s relatively small; you can drive across it in about forty minutes, although most vacationers prefer to walk or cycle. Saint-Martin-de-Ré is one of the most visited towns, located 6.3 km east of another popular destination, La Couarde-sur-Mer. La Flotte is 5.2 km south of Saint-Martin-de-Ré and 4.7 km north of Sainte-Marie-de-Ré. The latter is also 3.4 km west of Rivedoux-Plage.

What are the main destinations on the island? Which are the most iconic tourist spots? Here’s everything you need to know:

  • Saint-Martin-de-Ré
Saint-Martin-de-Ré is the main town of "La Ré Blanche." Here you’ll find the best restaurants, bistros, bars, and ice cream parlors. In the 1670s, King Louis XIV tasked his military engineer, Vauban, with strengthening the island’s defenses. Fortifications were built and are now part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Some visitors can’t resist climbing the church bell tower for a panoramic view of the terracotta-roofed houses.

  • The Salt Marshes
The salt marshes are located in the commune of Loix, on the north coast of the Île de Ré. These sites highlight the importance of salt production on the island. Specifically, the famous fleur de sel is produced here, characterized by finer crystals. Its production is entirely organic.

  • Ars-en-Ré
Ars-en-Ré is postcard-perfect. Unsurprisingly, this small town is among "The Most Beautiful Villages of France." In the center, it feels as if the village is asleep, even during the day. However, the streets and neighborhoods become livelier as you get closer to the coast. Ars-en-Ré’s narrow streets feature friendly bars and restaurants, galleries, and boutiques. The village is also known for the black and white pointed bell tower of its church, once used as a landmark for ships.

  • La Flotte
La Flotte is also ranked among "The Most Beautiful Villages of France." This charming harbor town is worth a visit to explore its delightful cafés, bistros, shops, and art galleries. Visitors also enjoy strolling through the bustling market, one of the liveliest places in La Flotte.
