Aquarium of La Rochelle - A Family Creation
The Aquarium of La Rochelle was born from engineer René Coutant's passion for the animal world. In the early 1950s, he pioneered the invention and production of the first saltwater aquariums. In 1970, he secured land in La Rochelle for marine species. Unfortunately, during the 1980s, a fire destroyed the aquarium, which had by then been taken over by René Coutant's children. Roselyne and Pascal Coutant embarked on a new project: the Grand Aquarium of La Rochelle. Following the success of this incredible space showcasing marine life, the aquarium was expanded in 2001 to house 12,000 animals, 600 species, and 3 million liters of seawater. Its evolution continues today, drawing visitors from around the globe to discover the history and marine species of the Aquarium of La Rochelle. Additionally, the establishment remains committed to environmental conservation, demonstrated through its public awareness initiatives.
